If your boss doesn’t pay your wages, that’s wage theft. If they don’t pay your super, that should be wage theft too. It’s your money. You earned it.
The Australian Tax Office estimates the Superannuation Guarantee Gap at around $6.2 billion and that it impacts 1 in 4 Australian workers. This is money that should be in your pocket and in our economy.
We tell Australians to work hard, save for retirement and take responsibility for their future. The least the Government can do is make sure the money you’ve earned, actually ends up in their super account.
The way it works at the moment, is that the onus is on you as a worker to follow up on your super. The system shouldn’t rely on you catching them.
If someone steals wages, we don’t expect the worker to solve the crime themselves. The same should apply to super.
That’s why Senator Fatima Payman is calling for a better cop on the beat to stop super theft and for compulsory superannuation payments to paid to all workers regardless of age, or hours worked.
